General Tire Overall Assessment

General tires have been in business for over a century and with this comes a wealth of experience and knowledge in tire construction. They are a brand that have tried to find the sweet spot between performance and price in order to appeal to a larger market.

general tire reviews

We liked most about General was their price. Their passenger tires are on average $6 cheaper than competitors and their SUV and truck tires are among the most cost effective on the market. What doubles with the price to make General tires a worthwhile consideration for your next purchase is the quality on offer. Overall, the brands combination of solid, all-round performance for a price that won’t break the bank is really what General have built their reputation on. > Compare tires here.

The performance on many of their models could be improved but one must remember that rarely can you have it all, and some performance has had to be foregone in the quest for affordability and market growth. The brand could also use a couple more choices as some of their ranges lack options necessary to fulfil the performance needs of your vehicle.

Price

Price is a major selling point for General tires that can be considered affordable. Across most of their ranges they have tires that will appeal to people of different levels of income and needs. From cheap and cheerful tires designed for simplicity and affordability to higher end high performance tires, General covers a large spectrum with their price although most of their range is marketed toward the budget conscious motorist.

Quality

In terms of quality, General sits mid table. Their tires are stringently tested and the 45-day road test period is better than many of its competitors’ 30-day road test periods and this says a lot about how General approach the quality of their tires and customer satisfaction. The brand has been around for over a century and with this comes an accumulation of learning and information that helps facilitate quality in construction.

Range

A hint to the range of this brand is hidden in the name. General has a decent line-up of tires including various sizes and specs to fit an array of vehicles. The manufacturer includes performance, passenger, truck, winter, and commercial tires amongst its range and aims to ensure that most types of vehicles are able to fit General tires.

Durability

General tires have solid warranties of up to 75,000 miles on some of their tires. The tires are also built hardily, and are resistant to minor damages, cuts and scuffs.  The tires are constructed with long-wearing tread compounds and rigid sidewalls which decrease tire bruising. Overall General tires can be considered fairly durable and long lasting.

Handling

General tires contain many performance features which have a positive effect on the overall handling.

Their SmartGrip technology increases the precision and responsiveness of the steering. Along with this SmartGrip technology is General’s StabiliTread. This creates a wider contact patch between the tire and the surface and increases the tires ability to grip allowing the driver to navigate bends in the road with confidence.

General Tire Customer Reviews

Moks says: “This is an excellent tire for any condition. I do a lot of driving on highways in the metro area of Minnesota, and drive all over backroads in the north for work. The tire is great in rain, mud, snow and pavement. Even with a bad hub, bearings and ball joints for a while, the wear has not been bad. The GENERAL GRABBER AT2 Definitely outperforms BFGs in any terrain. I love these tires and will be buying a fresh set soon.”

Scott says: “I have had good traction in heat, cold and rain. Cornering with these tires is something I look forward to and they are grippy around winding roads. No problems and the tread is holding up well after 15,000 miles. Would buy again.”
