How to Change a VW Jetta Tire

You woke up in the morning feeling super energized and ready to go to work, only to find out that one of your VW Jetta’s tires has gone bad. Not exactly the best situation to be in, right?

Well, you can just unmount the wheel, install a spare tire, and you’re good to go. If you’re not sure how to do that, we’ll help you figure out how to change a VW Jetta tire in this guide!

Before we get into how you can replace a VW tire, let’s first make sure that you have all the tools you need, which include:

  • A jack
  • Wheel wedges
  • A lug wrench
  • A spare tire or a full-size wheel
  • Instructions manual

It’s also important to change the tire in a safe place away from the road. You need to be able to move freely around the car without worrying about the other cars on the road.

If you have to replace the tire on the road, make sure that you’re on the far side, and your hazard lights are turned on.

Putting that aside, here’s a step-by-step guide to change your VW Jetta’s tire:

  1. Put your Jetta into parking mode if it has an automatic transmission, or pull the handbrake if it’s a manual.
  2. Use wheel wedges to lock the unaffected tires.
  3. Loosen the lug nuts with the lug wrench.
  4. Lift up the car with the jack.
  5. Remove the affected wheel using your lug wrench.
  6. Replace the wheel with another full-size wheel or a spare tire.
  7. Tighten the lug nuts as much as you can.
  8. Get the car back on the ground with the jack.

Check the Tire Pressure

Once you’ve replaced your VW Jetta’s tire, it’s recommended that you check the pressure of all four tires with a tire gauge. Increase the pressure of all underinflated tires to the manufacturer’s specification (found inside the driver’s door).

Ideally, you should check your tires’ pressure when they’re cold. If you have to do it when they’re slightly warm, it’d be a good idea to raise the pressure to up to 3 psi above the recommended number to compensate for that.

How Many Miles Can You Go With a Spare Tire?

A spare tire isn’t intended to be used for prolonged periods. As a general rule of thumb, you shouldn’t drive more than 50 miles after replacing your flat tire with a spare tire. Also, your speed isn’t supposed to exceed 50mph.

How Often Do You Need to Change Your VW Jetta’s Tires?

The VW Jetta’s tires are designed to withstand up to 50,000 miles or six years of use, whichever comes first. In some cases, you may need to replace your VW Jetta’s tires before hitting 50,000 miles or before six years have passed.

Inspect your tires every once in a while to check that all is good.

How to Change a VW Jetta Tire? A Quick Summary

Changing a VW Jetta tire is a fairly simple process and is pretty much how you’d replace any other car model’s tire, provided that you have the right tools to get the job done. All you have to do is lift the car up with a jack, replace the tire, and you’re good to go.

And remember, if you’re going to use a spare tire, make sure that you don’t drive a long distance with it. It’s not safe and could damage lots of components in your car.
